Roland TR-1000 Firmware 1.50 Turns the Rhythm Creator Into a Melodic Instrument

October 26, 2026 · Style For Musician · Roland News

Roland has released version 1.50 of the system software for the TR-1000 Rhythm Creator, and it is a substantial free update. Announced on October 22, 2026, the new firmware adds melodic sequencing, new instruments, new effects and a set of live-performance improvements that make the machine far more than a drum box.

The headline feature is melodic sequencing. A new NOTE step parameter lets users set pitch in semitones for compatible sound generators, so melodic sequences can now be programmed alongside conventional drum patterns. Alongside it, a new KEYBOARD play mode transforms the TR-1000’s step buttons into a playable keyboard for compatible sound generators, with two playing configurations and built-in scale options. For the first time, TR-1000 owners can perform pitched parts directly on the hardware instead of sequencing them note by note.

The sound palette grows as well. The update adds 50 FM instruments drawn from the Roland TR-8S library, expanding the TR-1000’s digital percussion and sound-design options, and a new COARSE parameter is available on all FM sound generators for additional pitch control. Four new multi-effects join the roster — Roll, Roll 2, Rev Pan Delay and SBF-325 — and the SBF-325 is also available as an insert effect for processing individual sounds. New modulation destinations include Layer A/B pan and the insert delay’s TIME parameter, which can also be assigned to a hardware knob for hands-on control.

Live performers get several thoughtful improvements. A new KEEP KIT EFX & EXT IN setting lets external input, reverb, delay, modulation, multi-effects and analog effects settings carry over when switching kits, so reverb tails and external sounds continue uninterrupted across kit changes. Analog effects routing gains an ANALOG option that sends analog effects to the dedicated AFX output only, while the existing MIX+ANA routing remains available. A new MIX ONLY option for individual outputs keeps a track available as digital audio over USB without sending it through its hardware output.

Workflow and interface updates round out the release: a PATTERN SELECT MODE setting with a MANUAL option that requires pressing ENTER to confirm a pattern selection, an AUTO TRACK SELECT option that selects a track when its step button is pressed, a Sample Auto Adjust system parameter that matches imported sample levels to the destination preset category, clearer Song Mode encoder indications, a larger BPM readout with tempo-nudge indicators, and graphical Filter EQ type displays.

Version 1.50 is available now as a free download for existing TR-1000 owners. For a machine built around analog synthesis, digital sound generators, sampling and pattern-based sequencing, this update meaningfully widens what the TR-1000 can do on stage and in the studio — and it costs its owners nothing.
